Heed his call

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's call to the people to practise development politics and to reject political politics (Interview, Sept. 25) is praiseworthy. Political parties should in their election manifestos include a pledge to build a competitive India and drop religion-based objectives.

Krishnaswami K.R.,
Chennai

President Kalam has rightly stressed the need to reform our education system. It is unfortunate that we still follow a system that has long outlived its requirement. Students go to school because they have to, not because they enjoy it. School managements are bothered only about ranks and about enhancing the prestige of their institutions. They seldom care about the pressure such an attitude puts on students.

Our politicians too are not concerned about this crucial issue. Eminent personalities from all walks of life should come forward and help the Government find a solution to this most pressing of problems.

I welcome President Kalam's decision not to seek another term in office. I would like to see Dr. Kalam, like the former U.S. President, Bill Clinton, spend the rest of his life in making the dreams of children come true in building India's future.

Vijay Naidu,
Alta Loma, California
