Reform them

The article, `All is not right about madrasas' (Open Page, Sept. 24), is an apt depiction of the state of these institutions today. However, the reasons are not those presented by the sangh parivar. These institutions churn out clerics to man mosques and madrasas, drawing students from poor families who cannot afford regular education. The well-to-do contribute funds to these institutions but cleverly stop their children from joining them. The only option is to make it mandatory for all madrasas and all such religious institutions to impart regular scientific education along with the relevant religious instruction.

It is heartening to note that there are still people who have the courage of conviction to call a spade a spade transcending religious identity.

C.P. Srinivasan,
Chennai

The madrasas, on their part, should encourage Muslims to get involved in social work projects to help the poor and remove misunderstandings about Islam and Muslims among non-Muslims.

Monitoring the activities of madrasas in terms of curriculum, training, and funding is critical to the integrity and stability of India. But this should not lead to the alienation of the community.

T. Marx,
Karaikal, Puducherry
