KABUL: Safia Annajan, Director of Women's Affairs of Kandahar province in Afghanistan, was killed by gunmen on Monday, a U.N. spokesman told a press conference here. Ms. Annajan was shot and killed at around 7:20 a.m. local time outside the front gate of her home as she left for work in Kandahar city, the provincial capital, said Aleem Siddique, spokesman for the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The gunmen riding motorcycles shot her dead when Ms. Annajan was getting into a car, according to local media reports. ``UNMAMA is appalled at the senseless murder of a woman who was simply working to ensure that all Afghan women play a full and equal part in the future of Afghanistan,'' said Mr. Siddique. No one has claimed responsibility for the murder, Mr. Siddique said, adding that the police are carrying out an investigation. Xinhua
