SINGAPORE: Shinzo Abe, the newly-elected leader of Japan's main ruling party, on Monday appointed his allies to the top positions in its hierarchy. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) later endorsed the appointments at an extraordinary meeting of the General Council in Tokyo. The party revamp took place on the eve of Mr. Abe's anticipated election as the country's next Prime Minister. The Diet (Parliament) will meet in Tokyo on Tuesday, and Mr. Abe is expected to be elected by it to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. The LDP's new secretary-general is Hidenao Nakagawa, while Nobuteru Ishihara, son of Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, is the new acting secretary-general. The father is known to have at one stage envisioned the possibility of turning Japan into a state that could stand up to the U.S.
