Balasubramanian and Laxman among leaders

Tuticorin: As many as 33 players, including the second-seeded International Master R.R. Laxman of Chennai, the third-seeded IM Balasubramanian Ramanathan of ICF and the fourth-seeded former champion M.B. Muraleedharan of Kerala, were in the lead with two points each at the end of the second round of the 19th SPIC Trophy FIDE-rated chess tournament, organised by the Tuticorin District Chess Association and SPIC Central Sports Council, at the SPIC Nagar Community Hall, Tuticorin, on Monday.

Meenu triumphs

At Madurai, Se. Meenu Priya of Seventh Day Adventist MHSS won the under-25 title in the State-level open chess tournament, organised by the Chanakya Chess Academy and Madurai District Chess Association, on Sunday.

PSNA emerges champion

At Madurai, PSNA College (Dindigul) lifted the Lagaan Trophy with a five-wicket win over American College (Madurai) in the inter-collegiate cricket tournament, organised by Sourashtra College, on Monday.

The scores (final): American College 126 in 22 overs (Vinoth 57) lost to PSNA College 129 for five in 13 overs (Vinoth Kumar 41, Saravanan 32).

Semifinals: Sourashtra College 'A' 120 for seven in 20 overs lost to PSNA College 126 for four in 15 overs (Raman 59, N. Saravanan four for 26); Alagappa University (Karaikudi) 136 in 19 overs lost to American College 139 for five in 17 overs (Pandiarajan four for 16).
