Autonomy move retrograde, says Karaikal Struggle Group

Special Correspondent

KSG convener writes to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Puducherry: The Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG) has called upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene immediately to prevent the conversion of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research into an autonomous body.

KSG convener S. P. Selvashanmugham, in a release from Karaikal on Monday, said any move to change the administrative status of JIPMER should be effected only after ascertaining the wishes of the people of the Union Territory. He said he had written a detailed letter to the Prime Minister bringing to his notice the spirit of the Treaty of Cession through which the French transferred power and facilitated the merger of the then French establishments in India with the Indian union.

Mr. Selvashanmugham said the Treaty signed between the French and the Indian governments for the liberation of the Union Territory in 1954 also provided for medical education for students here and treatment for locals on priority basis in JIPMER. If the institute became autonomous despite this specific provision in the treaty, people of the Union Territory would lose their rights and benefits, he said.

Mr. Selvashanmugham also requested Dr. Singh to send a high powered committee of the Central Government to take stock of the ground realities in JIPMER and to study the mood of the people.

He said he had urged that fifty percent of the total seats in the MBBS course in JIPMER be earmarked for students of the Union Territory and 25 per cent of this for students of the Karaikal region.
