Chief Minister condoles Padmini's death

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday condoled the death of film star Padmini.

In a message, Mr. Karunanidhi said his grief knew no bounds as the actor, despite her failing health, had attended the function organised by the Tamil film fraternity to felicitate him on Saturday.

Describing her as a shining star among the stars, he said she shot into fame in the film world through her performance.

"How could death become too merciless to snatch away the embodiment of beauty and marvellous queen of art," he wondered.

State secretary of the Communist Party of India D. Pandian said the septuagenarian actor had been rejuvenating the Tamil film world through her performance for over five decades. — Special Correspondent

Electronic goods seized, 3 arrested

CHENNAI: Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Chennai, have intercepted three passengers who arrived from Singapore at the Anna International Terminal and seized from them electronic goods, watches, automobile parts in trade quantities and a marine communication equipment.

According to P. Babu, Additional Director General of DRI, the passengers had not declared all the goods brought by them and their actual value. One of the passengers had brought huge quantities of cheap foreign watches, watch movements and watch parts having a total market value of Rs.27 lakh. He had also brought 50 numbers of branded watches by concealing them with other goods. Another passenger had brought high valued foreign bulbs and automobile parts having a market value of Rs. 8 lakh. He had also brought a marine communication equipment. The third passenger had brought a foreign digital video camera, LCD projectors, data cartridges, piston liners/ring sets having a market value of Rs.10 lakh. In all, Rs.45 lakh worth of goods were seized. The three who are frequent travellers bringing foreign goods were arrested and remanded to judicial custody on Sunday. — Special Correspondent

MDMK backs JIPMER employees' bandh call

CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has said his party would support Tuesday's bandh called by employees of the JIPMER, Pondicherry, to protest against the conferment of autonomy to the institution.

In a statement, Mr. Vaiko said MDMK was not in favour of making JIPMER autonomous, as it was functioning well under the current set up. He also appealed to the Government to drop cases filed against some of the protestors and to take them back into service unconditionally. — Special Correspondent

More space for IT companies

Coimbatore: Kumaraguru College of Technology is expanding its Information Technology Park to incorporate more built-up area and IT players. Cognizant Technology Solutions Limited and Spheris India Limited are operating in the park.

Appointed honorary wildlife warden

TIRUNELVELI: Tamil Nadu Government has appointed Albert Rajendran, Reader, Research Department of Zoology, St. John's College, Palayamkottai, as Honorary Wildlife Warden of Tirunelveli zone. Dr. Rajendran will hold the post till September 5, 2007. — Staff Reporter

Bandobust duty

Tiruchi: The services of ex-servicemen would be used for bandobust duty during the coming local body elections. Those interested ex-servicemen from Tiruchi, Perambalur and Karur districts could approach the Assistant Director, Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Tiruchi along with discharge certificate and identity card in person, an official press release issued here said.

Man run over

Tiruchi: A man aged around 35 years was run over by a goods train near Mutharasanallur in the Tiruchi - Karur broad gauge section on Monday, railway police sources here said.

The identity of the victim is not known, according to police sources.

Held for smuggling sand

KARUR: One person was arrested on charges of smuggling sand near Lalapet on Monday.

The police confiscated the sand-laden lorry driven by R. Mahendran (48) of Coimbatore. He was transporting sand without any valid papers.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 102.19 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Monday. The inflow was 9,638 cusecs and outflow 21,609 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Rain continues

Nagercoil : Heavy rain continued to lash various parts of Kanyakumari district for the second day on Monday.

The maximum rainfall of 122 mm was recorded at Chittar I followed by 110.4 in Pechipparai, 95.4 in Chittar II, 85 in Surulode, 84 in Puthen dam, 10.3 in Kottaram and 9.2 in Myladi.

Fatally knocked down

TIRUNELVELI : A woman was fatally knocked down by a two-wheeler rider at Paavoorchathram on Monday.

The police said K. Muthukaruppayi (65) of Moolakkaraiyoor was knocked down when she was going home. Though she was rushed to the Tenkasi Government Hospital, she died on the way.

The Paavoorchathram police have picked up the rider B. Mariappan of Keezhapaavoor.

Chain snatched

Nagercoil : The police are on the lookout for two persons on a charge of snatching a gold chain from a woman on Sunday.

Vigila, wife of Nallathampi of Kattathurai was returning home from here when the duo snatched her two sovereign chain.

Dies in accident

Nagercoil : A woman was killed on the spot in a road accident on Sunday.

According to the police, the unidentified woman tried to cross Thiruvananthapuram national highway road at Thuckalay, when a tempo coming from the opposite direction hit her, killing her on the spot.

House burgled

Tuticorin : The Nalatinpudur police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons who allegedly burgled a house at Kadalaiyoor duirng the wee hours of Monday. They decamped with 19.3 sovereigns of jewels, cash of Rs.21,000 and two watches from the house of K Gnanaraj (47), while the inmates were away. — Staff Reporter

Nominations filed

ERODE: Over 1,000 men and women of various political parties and independents filed their nominations on Monday for the local body elections. Kumar K. Murugesan (DMK) filed his nomination for Erode Municipal ward 28, supposedly for the post of municipal chairman. Former DMK Minister N.K.K. Periyasamy and Handlooms Minister N.K.K.P. Raja visited the Erode Municipal Office. Prominent politicians belonging to DMK, Congress, PMK and AIADMK also filed their nominations in other municipalities and panchayats in the district.

Hospital workers go on strike

SALEM: The sanitary workers working on contract basis at the Salem Government Medical College Hospital went on a strike on Monday demanding the hospital authorities to disburse the salary.

They claimed that they had not received their salary for the past three months. Despite repeated representations, the officials were yet to take any action to distribute the salary.

Two arrested

SALEM: The Narcotics Intelligence Bureau personnel arrested two persons and seized six kg of ganja from them here recently.

According to police, the two were moving in a suspicious manner at Kondalampatti.

World calling card

SALEM: Hutch, the cellular service provider, has introduced the world calling card, a long distance calling solution for frequent users of the ISD facility here recently.

According to a press release, the cards are available for Rs. 110 and Rs. 550.

The card will enable postpaid and prepaid customers of Hutch to make ISD and STD calls at lower rates without making any security deposits towards subscription to the service, the release said.

Upgraded

Dharmapuri: Three Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) centres in Dharmapuri district have been upgraded to primary schools for 2006-07, said Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal here on Monday.

The EGS centres in Kulapatti and Panapatti in Pennagaram block and Pachiappankottai in Nallampalli block had been upgraded.

Two classroom buildings and a teacher had been sanctioned for each centre.
