Manmohan to open State jubilee

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the 50-day-long celebrations marking the Golden Jubilee of Kerala's formation in Thiruvananthapuram on November 1. Dr. Singh accepted an invitation extended by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan when the latter called on him at his 7, Race Course Road official residence here on Monday morning along with his Cabinet colleagues.

During the visit, the details of which are yet to be worked out, the Prime Minister is likely to lay the foundation stone for a new international terminal at the airport in the State capital, Achuthanandan said after the meeting. — PTI

Farming Corporation initiative

Thiruvananthapuram: The Farming Corporation has taken steps to electrify the workers family accommodation in the estates under it. The electrification work in the Mullumala, Cheripittakavu, Sahyaseema, Sivasanu, Kottakayam and Ambanar estates will be completed expeditiously. The work in the Kumarakamkudy estate will be taken up as soon as the Forest Department gave its permission and will be completed in a phased manner. The information was furnished by Agriculture Minister Mullakara Retnakaran while replying to a submission by K.B.Ganesh Kumar (KC(B) in the Assembly on Monday. — Special Correspondent

Homage paid to Padmini

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has paid rich tributes to Padmini. In a message here on Monday, he said Padmini, last link of the Travancore Sisters who were accomplished dancers, came to cinema from the field of dance and proved her mettle there also.

In addition to Malayalam, she acted in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. She exhibited her dancing prowess and acting abilities in these films. She was the shining link of generations. He condoled the demise of a noted artiste of Malayalam. — Special Correspondent

Fish landing centre

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma has said that the Government would conducted a feasibility study to see if a fish landing centre could be set up at Valiyathura in Thiruvananthapuram. Responding to a calling attention motion moved by V. Surendran Pillai (KC-J) in the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Sarma said formal decision on the issue would have to wait till the report of the feasibility study was received. The Government, he said, would also consider the member's request for a breakwater at Poonthura in the district. - Special Correspondent

Admissions open

KOLLAM: Admissions for the graduate and postgraduate courses of the Punjab Technical University have started. The courses are MBA, MCA, M.Sc. Information Technology and B.Sc. Information Technology. The courses have the recognition of the University Grants Commission. CWRDM staff plea

Kozhikode: Employees of the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM), under the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment, have said that they have not been given the benefits of pay revision. In a letter to the authorities concerned, they said their service rules had not been finalised. A section of the technical staff had been denied leave surrender. A meeting of the employees unions on September 22 had decided to resort to agitation if the demands were not met. The unions also threatened to boycott the 19th Kerala Science Congress in January 2007. — Staff Reporter

Resigns as INTUC district president

Thrissur: T.V. Chandramohan on Monday resigned from the post of INTUC district president. Mr. Chandramohan said he was putting in his papers owing to increasing responsibilities as State general secretary of the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran). He said that he would continue, however, as State and national working committee member of the INTUC. — Staff Reporter

Protest rally against liquor policy

ALAPPUZHA: The Kerala Madya Nirodhana Samithi Maruthorvattom unit in the district will organise a rally on September 28 in protest against the policy of the State Government to start 300 more liquor outlets, State secretary of the samithi Susan John said. The rally would begin at 4.30 p.m. from Cherthala Government Polytechnic and conclude at the Cherthala KSRTC bus stand. Ms. John termed the Government move an "irresponsible act" which would affect the public. — Staff Reporter
