Thiruvananthapuram: Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran has expressed relief at the reported pronouncements made by the Supreme Court during the consideration of the Mullaperiyar case. In an official statement here on Monday he said the pronouncements were made taking into consideration Kerala's view that Mullaperiyar was not a mere legal matter but a social issue which posed a threat to the lives and properties of the people of five districts of the State. It was also a recognition of the State's mature stand that Kerala and Tamil Nadu should settle the issue through talks. The Supreme Court had through its pronouncements upheld Kerala's stand that in a federal set-up, the States should function with mutual understanding and cooperation. Tamil Nadu should under the circumstances be prepared to solve the issue amicably through talks, he said. The developments also strengthened Kerala's demand for the Prime Minister's intervention in the issue as it was one for which a politically solution had to be found, the Minister added.
