All set to redraw the country's broadcast map

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: Every medium of entertainment relies on content to get across to its target audience. And Big 92.7 FM began its nationwide station rollout from the Capital on Monday with programmes on religion, day-to-day problems of the common man, human emotion and, of course, loads of entertainment.

With an ambitious plan of touching the lives of 200 million radio listeners the new station is all set to re-draw the broadcast map of the country. Unveiling the brand in the Capital, Big 92.7 FM Chief Operating Officer Tarun Katial said: "Spanning across 45 cities, 1,000 towns and 50,000 villages to reach out to people across the country, the new station will have a great networking strength. Besides young adult contemporary programmes, we will have shows relating to human emotions. Our radio jockeys will be sensitive, intelligent not intellectual, and intimate yet knowing where to draw the line."

Besides announcing that Bollywood's leading superstar Abhishek Bachchan will be the new station's brand ambassador, Mr. Katial also disclosed the names of some celebrities as its radio jockeys. Mona Singh, protagonist of the famous television soap opera "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi", who will be the radio jockey on the radio's programme "Big Chai", will be speaking only to Delhi listeners. Stating that playing a radio jockey on the radio was a daunting task, Mona said: "When you have to converse with a person who is not present before you, it becomes a bit difficult but I have been trained to be an RJ. I will talk to people who are facing problems in relationships, jobs and need counselling. I will clear their dilemmas by involving radio listeners to seek their opinion. Nowadays radio has become the in-thing and everywhere you can see people listening to radio."

As an RJ, Mona will be joined by Gaurav Ghera, who essayed the role of Nandu in the popular TV serial. Revealing that she had to constantly shuttle between Mumbai and New Delhi, Mona said: "I have to be in the Capital for three days to record my voice on Big 92.7 FM, while on other days I have to be in Mumbai to rehearse and dance before a panel of judges in `Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' on Sony Entertainment Television."

With his wisecracks, Sunil Pal of the "Great Indian Laughter Challenge" fame will tickle the funny bone of listeners. Actress Pallavi Joshi and Vrijesh Hirjee will host programmes in Mumbai, Kaushik and Sheilajit in Kolkata, C. K. Chandru and Dayanand will anchor in Bangalore and Uma Riaz Khan in Chennai.
