Package demanded for terror victims

MOGA: The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to announce a financial package for the 20,000 terror-affected families in the State, party spokesman said on Monday.

In a letter written by its party president Shamsher Singh Dullo to the Prime Minister's office, the party says the package must be similar to that provided to the 1984 riot victims.

Mr. Dullo has also mentioned in his letter that these terror-affected families had earlier met Congress president who promised to look into the matter "sympathetically".

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is slated to visit the State on September 27.

SPO killed by landmine

Jagdalpur: A Special Police Officer was killed on the spot in a landmine blast triggered by naxals in Chhattisgarh's south Bastar region on Monday, police said.

A foot patrol, including personnel from Dantewara district, was heading for Bijapur from Cherpal when the explosion occurred near Bhogamguda killing SPO Ramprasad. A crossfire ensued. The officer's corpse was brought to Bijapur.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Mahendra Karma addressed a `Salwa Judum' (Peace Mission) meeting at Basaguda where he said that a fresh strategy would be adopted against the rebels.

Girl raped, two arrested

Dehra Dun: A 21-year-old girl was allegedly raped inside a Christian hostel in the city and two persons were arrested in this connection, police said on Monday.

Stephen Masih, who works as manager of the hostel and his brother-in-law Dileep were arrested after the girl's brother lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday.

When the hostel management came to know about the incident, it suspended Masih and set up an inquiry committee which found the allegations to be "correct" after preliminary investigation, police claimed.

One killed in mishap

Moga: A 45-year-old man was killed and two of his nephews suffered serious injuries when a Punjab Roadways' bus hit the motorcycle they were travelling in Moga-Zira road, police said on Monday.

Navtej Singh and his nephews were rushed to a hospital. But Singh succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, they said.

Singh was going to his native village Shushak near Zira after attending a religious function at the residence of his relatives along with his two nephews.

The condition of Singh's nephews was stated to be serious.

Strike threat

NEW DELHI: Nine bank officers' and employee unions under the banner of United Forum of Bank Unions will strike work next month to press for demands relating to pension benefits, restoration of compassionate ground appointments and to oppose merger and acquisition of banks.

According to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh-affiliated National Organisation of Bank Workers', (NOBW) the unions would go on day's strike on October 27 and an indefinite stir later if their demands were not met.

Ants in almond syrup

NEW DELHI: A well-known snack food company has been asked by a consumer court here to pay Rs.2,000 as compensation to a buyer who found ants in a sealed bottle of almond syrup.

The Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission headed by Justice J D Kapoor and Member Rumnitta Mittal described it as deficiency in services and ordered Haldi Ram Product Private Limited (HRPPL) to pay Rs.2,000 within in a week to buyer Kuldeep Singh.
