Hearing adjourned

Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court on Monday adjourned till October 5 hearing on a contempt petition filed against the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh and the Principal Secretary, Urban Development, for alleged failure to hold local body elections despite a court order to this effect.

Justice D.P. Singh was hearing the petition filed by Rakesh Kumar Singh, an advocate, alleging that despite a High Court order of December 22, 2005, by which a direction for holding of local body polls within six months was given, the State Government failed to do so. Appearing on behalf of the two officers, who were present in the court, State Advocate-General S.M.A. Kazmi filed an affidavit stating that in compliance with the court order, a notification for holding of local body polls had been issued.

The court, while asking the petitioner's counsel to file his reply by the next date of hearing, exempted both the officers from appearing in person. -- PTI
