Meiktila battle hero dead

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Major General (retired) Ranvir Bakshi, hero of the battle of Meiktila (then Burma), died in Dehra Dun on Monday. He was 94.

The battles of Meiktila and Mandalay were decisive for, despite logistical difficulties, the Allies deployed large armoured and mechanised forces in Central Burma. These, with air support, destroyed most of the Japanese forces in Burma. Gen. Bakshi was awarded the Military Cross for his heroic role in the battle.
