dated September 27, 1956: 15 p.c. seats for women

The Congress General Secretary, Mr. Shriman Narain, announced in Lucknow on September 25 that the Central Election Committee had decided to allot 15 per cent of Congress seats in the legislature to women. The proportion of seats for minorities would be in accordance with the ratio of their population in different States. It had also been made clear by the Central Election Committee that those partymen who had applied for Congress ticket during the last general elections and signed a pledge not to oppose Congress candidates and yet violated the pledge would not be eligible for Congress ticket this time. It also meant that those Congress candidates who might violate party discipline during the forthcoming elections by opposing the official Congress candidates would not be eligible for party candidature in the elections to be held in 1962.
