THANJAVUR: Farmers in the Cauvery delta region of Thanjavur district have netted a good kuruvai yield in the current season, M. Jothi, Joint Director of Agriculture, said on Tuesday. Talking to The Hindu , Mr. Jothi said the harvest of the short-term kuruvai crop had so far been completed on 16,000 hectares out of the 43,500 hectares covered. The entire harvest is likely to be completed in 20 days. Mr. Jothi said the harvest was in full swing in the Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Thiruvaiyaru, Orathanadu and Tiruvidaimarudur areas. A maximum of 12.52 tonnes a hectare was harvested by a farmer. The average yield was 5.70 tonnes. Most of the farmers had raised the short-term ADT-43 variety. The Department proposed to raise samba crop on one lakh hectares this year. The transplantation had been completed on 45,000 hectares. Nurseries were ready to cover the remaining 55,000 hectares. The entire transplantation would be completed in a fortnight, he said. He said the transplantation of thaladi crop had commenced wherever the kuruvai paddy was harvested. Transplantation had been completed on 3,500 hectares out of the targeted 35,000 hectares. The standing kuruvai and samba crops were in good condition. The Department stocked adequate quantity of fertilizer and seeds.
