NEW DELHI: The Chennai-based Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has added another feather to its cap. It became the first winner of the Rs. 10 lakh CSIR Award for S&T Innovations for Rural Development, instituted earlier this year. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presented the award here on Tuesday to A.B. Mandal, acting CLRI Director, and A. Subbarama Naidu, head of the Business Process Division at the institution. The citation said the award had been conferred on CLRI for its efforts at designing, developing and delivering a basket of critical technologies, which benefited nearly 1.4 million people engaged in the leather sector in rural areas. The citation, read out by CSIR Director-General R.A. Mashelkar, drew attention to the innovative technologies for the recovery and fuller utilisation of carcasses of fallen animals in villages, for improvement of the vegetable tanning process and for standardised production of the `kolhapuri chappal.' "The technology packages developed and delivered by CLRI in a large number of locations in the country are in practice and serve as models for replication of these S&T innovations for rural development," it added.
Award for V. Balaji
The Prime Minister also presented CSIR's prestigious Shanti Swarup prize for Excellence in Science and Technology to Vikraman Balaji of the Chennai Mathematical Institute at Siruseri for his contributions in the field of mathematical sciences.
