KANCHEEPURAM: For parents of children hit by multiple disorders, the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities at Muttukadu in Kancheepuram district offers a glimmer of hope. A mother of four-year-old female twins was anxiously sitting next to them in the classroom for autism-hit children. Another was fretfully watching her two-and-half-year-old girl affected by cerebral palsy and visual and hearing impairment undergoing vibration therapy at the institute. Within a year, the institute on East Coast Road offers hope to parents in 150 villages in Chengalpattu taluk, who have given birth to mentally retarded children or whose children have been affected by cerebral palsy and autism. Patients come from Cuddalore, Vellore and Mumbai. One hundred and twenty-six persons have been registered with it.
