Shantaraj sets meet record

Mysore: R. Shantaraj of Bangalore City Sports Hostel hogged the limelight by setting a new meet record in javelin throw on the opening day of the State-level Dasara Games at the Chamundivihar Sports complex, here on Tuesday.

Overnight rain and sharp showers in the morning delayed the opening ceremony, which was inaugurated by the former sprint queen Ashwini Nachappa.

Shantaraj who is a National medallist, erased the previous record of 60.98m set by Bharath Kumar of Bangalore Rural in 2005 with a throw of 69.22m.

Earlier the organisers honoured Dhyanchand Udhay K. Prabu and Dronacharya Capt. M. Uenu during the inaugural function.

Mysore half-marathon

A third Mysore half-marathon (21.1km) will be held on Wednesday morning (8.30 a.m.) for men, women, college boys (12km) and girls (6km) and High School boys (6km) and girls (3km). The event will begin from the Palace North gate and finish at the Chamundivihar Stadium. Notable runners like Leelamma Alphonse, Sanya Bhama and Suma of Northern Railway have confirmed their participation.
