Corrections and clarifications

  • The sentence in "Meiktila battle hero dead" (September 26, 2006) was: "Major General (retired) Ranvir Bakshi, hero of the battle of Meiktila (then Burma) died in Dehra Dun on Monday." A reader points out that Meiktila is a place in Myanmar (Burma). The sentence should have been: "... battle of Meiktila (in Myanmar, then Burma) ... ."

  • The sentence in "This age is set for historical evolution, says President" (September 25, 2006) was: "On [the] energy front, the country is now generating 1.3 lakh MW of power and by 2030, it will have to generate four to five MW." As a reader points out, it should have been "... four to five lakh MW." It was an editing error.

  • In the AFP report "Celibacy over longevity" ("Newscape", September 23, 2006), the sentence was: "Longer life at the cost of celibacy proved more popular with women than men as 48 per cent of women surveyed said they would give up sex to live until 100 but only 31 per cent of men agreed." A reader points out that it should have been "at the cost of sex". Another reader says that the phrase "at the cost of" implies "as an alternative to" and it does not mean "as a result of", which is presumably what is what was intended to be stated. The Oxford Dictionary states that "at the cost of" means "at the expense of losing (something)".
