KOCHI: Ernakulam's G.N. Gopal won his maiden State youth chess title at the Regional Sports Centre Chess Academy here on Tuesday. The second seed's penultimate round victory over top seed K. Ratnakaran was virtually the turning point as the duo was level on points till then. Ratnakaran finished runner-up while Waynad's P.K. Arjun was third. The top two will represent Kerala at the National youth championship to be held in Aurangabad next month. RSC secretary George Thomas gave away the prizes. The results: Round six: A. Niji drew with G.N. Gopal; K. Ratnakaran bt Ramakrishnan; P.K. Arjun bt K.V. Vignesh; Pareeskhith Rama Varma lost to K.R. Dhanulal; E.P. Nirmal bt S. Sherfin; A. Neenu bt E. Sreedharan; Thomas Nithin lost to A.S. Vishnu Prasad; Vishnu Gopakumar lost to M.B. Sidharth; Suroop Krishna lost to Mohammed Reja; P.A. Ajmal bt Renjith D. Menon. Round five: Gopal bt Ratnakaran; P. Rama Varma lost to Niji; Vishnu Prasad lost to Arjun; Vignesh bt Sreedharan; Ramakrishnan bt Ajmal; Sidharth drew with Nirmal; Dhanulal bt M. Reja; Hari Vijayan lost to Neenu; Sreenath lost to Thomas Nithin; Renjith Menon lost to Suroop Krishna. Final placings: 1. G.N. Gopal (Ekm, 5.5 pts), 2. K. Ratnakaran (Kzd, 5), 3. P.K.
