Vivek wins u-16 boys title

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: G.L. Vivek won the boys' U-16 title in the 63rd Trivandrum Open tennis tournament at the TTC courts on Tuesday. In the final, Vivek breezed past U.K. Jayaram 6-2, 6-2.

Anand George won the U-14 title with a 6-1, 6-0 win over H. Suraj. Arjuna Ajaykumar beat R. Kishore Kumar 9-8 to pocket the U-10 title. In the girls' section, A.V. Rithika defeated Anjali Jayandhan 7-1 for the U-10 title.

Pooja cricket

At Kochi, the 56th Pooja all-India cricket tournament, one of the oldest limited overs event in the country, begins with the first-phase matches at the Tripunithura Palace Oval here on October 1.

Sixteen teams, including Kochi Refineries Limited, Cycle Brand Kids (Thiruvananthapuram), Muthoot Ernakulam CC and host Cordiant Tripunithura CC, will figure in the first phase which will be a qualifying event for the main tournament. The teams for the main phase will be announced later.

The Tripunithura CC plans to make the tournament a lively and colourful affair this year. It will conduct a road show, which will include popular musicians and comedians, to promote the event.

Cricket academy

The club, which has its own ground, has also decided to start a cricket academy. Former India captain Kapil Dev will lay the foundation stone for the academy during the tournament, said Saby John, the TCC secretary.

Salmon shines

At Palakkad, spinner Salmon Sebastian, who took four wickets conceding just nine runs, helped Ernakulam thrash Thrissur by 10 wickets in the Central Zone under-15 inter-district cricket championship here on Tuesday.

The scores:

Thrissur 58 in 28.4 overs (Salmon Sebastian four for 9) lost to Ernakulam 59 for no loss in 6.3 overs (Alan George 33 not out).
