HYDERABAD: In a bid to ensure greater value and importance to the Chief Minister's Cup State-level sports meet, the government is contemplating issuing necessary directions, to consider the certificates of the medallists for admission to professional courses, according to J.R. Anand, Principal Secretary to State Government (Y&AT). This comes in the wake of the AP Olympic Association secretary L. Venkatram Reddy recently saying that the certificates of the CM's Cup will not have any value for the above purpose. "We will soon discuss with the APOA and see that the participants have a motivating factor to excel in the CM's Cup," Mr. Anand said. "We will also try and give some cash awards for outstanding performers," he added.
Mere sports festivals
It may be recalled that the previous editions of the CM's Cup were reduced to mere sports festivals with no value (in terms of admissions) for the certificates won by the participants. "The Youth Services Department has released Rs. 40 lakhs as its share for the Cup and the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh will contribute about Rs.1.70 crores besides pooling of sponsorship money up to another Rs. 1.5 crores," Mr. Anand said. Sports Minister M. Satyanarayana Rao chipped in to say that every effort was being made to see that the Cup was organised in a grand manner. "Let me make it clear that whatever money is saved through sponsorship after organising the meet will be diverted to a corpus fund of the SAAP for future sports activities. There will be no scope for any mismanagement," he said.
Stars cricket
SAAP chairman M.S. Raj Thakur said that the stars cricket match on September 30 at the Lal Bahadur Stadium would see top heroes of both Tamil and Telugu film industry, except Chiranjeevi, who has gone abroad. "The match is just an extension of SAAP's intention to popularise the CM's Cup and not to make money," Mr. Thakur clarified. D. Suresh, film producer, informed that the film industry would be contributing about Rs.1 crore through MAA TV, which will take care of the expenses including live telecast of the match.
SAI coach Madhukaran
to join Indian camp
N. Madhukaran, SAI hockey coach, has been asked to join the Indian hockey camp commencing in Rourkela from September 28. This Hyderabad-based coach will work under chief coach V. Baskaran and his two deputies Harendra Singh and Clarence Lobo before the Test series against Japan in India from October 11 to 20. Madhukaran was the coach of the Indian women's team in many international events earlier and also a regular at the National men's camps in Gachibowli since the 2003 Afro-Asian Games.
