Five players share the lead

Tuticorin: Five players — M.B. Muralidharan of Kerala, M. Vinoth Kumar of Chennai, C. Natarajan of ICF, P. Phoobalan of SRM College and Dusthageer Ibragim of Madurai — share the lead with four points each at end of the fourth round in the 19th SPIC Trophy Fide-rated chess tournament here on Tuesday.

Ten players, including International Masters R.R. Laxman and R. Bala Subramanian are behind the leaders with 3.5 points apiece.

Chess tournament

Manikandan is the best

At Madurai, N.A. Manikandan of Thirunagar Gym was adjudged the best lifter and lifted the S. Varadarajan memorial cup in the 18th Madurai District junior weightlifting championship organised by the Madurai District Weightlifting Association on Sunday.

Govindammal Aditanar wins table tennis title

At Nagercoil, Govindammal Aditanar College, Tiruchendur, retained the table tennis title in the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University inter-collegiate women's games defeating St. Mary's College, Tuticorin, 3-1 in the final on Tuesday.

The results:

Table tennis: Semifinals: St. Mary's College (Tuticorin) bt Devi Kumari College (Nagercoil) 3-1; Govindammal Aditanar College (Tiruchendur) bt MDT Hindu College (Tirunelveli) 3-0.

Kho kho: Govindammal bt MSU College (Satankullam) 15 -0; Women Christian College (Nagercoil) bt APC Mahalakshmi College (Tuticorin) 15-2; Sri Paramakalayani College (Alwarkurichi) bt Annai Velankanni College (Tholaiyavatam, Kanyakumari District) 14-1.

Ramesh scalps five

At Tuticorin, a five-wicket haul by Ramesh (five for 22) and a half-century by Jegan Junior (59) helped Power Cricket Club defeat Youth Cricket Club by 86 runs in the Tuticorin District Cricket Association's first division league on Sunday.

The scores:

First division: Power CC 220 in 41 overs (Jegan Jr. 59, Siva Chandra Bose 33) bt Youth CC 134 in 36.1 overs (Ramesh five for 22).

Second division: ASKR CC 224 in 38.2 overs (Saravanan 42, Ananth 38) bt Young Star CC 222 in 39.3 overs (Rajesh Kannan 39, Fredrick 39, Baskar 57).

Third division: VOC CC 26 in 10.2 overs (Godson seven for four) lost to Ramesh Flowers CC 28 for two in 2.3 overs.
