Srinagar:
An Army officer and two militants were killed in a gunbattle in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. A major tragedy was also averted with timely detection of an improvised explosive device (IED) in Udhampur district.
Acting on a tip-off, the Army launched a search operation at village Sumbler in Bandipora, about 60 km from here, sparking off a gunfight with militants, a police spokesman said.
The encounter started around 11:45 am and continued for about six hours during which Captain Vishal and two unidentified militants were killed, the spokesman said. Two houses, where militants had taken shelter, were also damaged. The bodies of the militants were recovered from the debris of the houses, the spokesman said, adding that two AK assault rifles, an under barrel grenade launcher (UBGL) with two grenades and some ammunition were recovered from slain militants whose identity and group affiliation is being ascertained.
