`Maoist had pleaded with the police not to kill him and was willing to surrender'

ANANTAPUR: A fact-finding panel of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee and Organisation for the Protection of Democratic Rights, which visited the site of "encounter killing" of a Maoist on September 18 here, accused the police of committing a daylight murder.

The committee interacted with locals at Korrakodu village of Kuderu mandal to find out facts about the killing of deputy commander of Penna Ahobilam dalam Venkatesh alias Babu. The panel said that six policemen in mufti arrived at the auto stand in the village on September 18 morning and enquired about Babu. Sensing danger, Babu, who was sitting inside an auto, took to his heels.

The police shot him on his legs. The police caught him, interrogated him for about half-an-hour and shot him dead on the spot, the committee alleged.

Villagers also told the committee that the injured Maoist pleaded with the police not to kill him and promised to surrender. Villagers further told the committee that Babu did not carry any weapons, as is being claimed by the police.

The committee comprising M. Purushottam, K. Nageswarachari, G. Bommaiah and S. Venkatesulu of APCLC and M. Srinivasulu and Nallappa of OPDR demanded booking of cases under Section 302 of IPC against the police men responsible. .
