Jandhyala Charitable Trust conducts free caesarean camp

IT'S CUTE: A newborn baby at the free cesarean camp in Eluru.

ELURU: For several pregnant women, the long-drawn trauma and fear over their safety gave way to ecstasy.

And, the midnight tranquillity was interrupted by cries of newborn babies and lullabies on K.M Hospital premises in Ramachandraraopet, the venue for the six-hour free caesarean camp organised by the Jandhyala Charitable Trust.

A team of doctors, headed by B. Nirmala Devi of the hospitals and founder of the trust, ensured safe delivery of 18 babies, with a weight ranging between 3 kg and 5 kg each, at the camp that began in the small hours of Monday and lasted till 6 a.m. The babies and their mothers were hale and healthy.

The team included G. Satyanarayana of Government Hospital, Eluru, and Venkataramana (anaesthetist) of NRI Hospital, Mangalagiri in Guntur district, P.S. Murthy and L.V.S.K. Jagannadha Rao (paediatricians).

Abnormalities

Dr. Nirmala Devi told The Hindu that tumour in the pelvis, congenital `malformed' pelvis, certain abnormalities in birth canal and cervical dystocia, a condition under which cervix, the mouth of womb, remains closed at the time of delivery, were noticed among pregnant women in the camp leading to caesarean.

In another case, the doctors resorted to caesarean as the baby had the umbilical cord entwined around its neck in the womb.

Most of the women came from rural areas with poor social and economic background.

They were provided free food, lodging and medicare at the camp, Dr. Nirmala Devi said. Pre-natal screening tests were carried out in Chintalapudi, T. Narsapur, Kannapuram, Lingapalem and other upland areas under the aegis of the trust.
