TIRUCHI:
Residents of several villages in Marungapuri panchayat union are dismayed over the tardy pace of renovation of the tanks, which suffered large-scale breaches in last year's floods.
They are wholly dependent on the rainwater accruing from monsoon stored in the tanks for irrigation purpose. Since the storage in water bodies is also vital for recharging the aquifer, they shudder to fathom the inevitability of rainwater flowing away for want of storage space.
According to local sources, out of 117 system tanks under the control of the panchayat union, noteworthy repair works have not been undertaken in as many as 90 tanks. Also, the breach that last year's floods caused to the water tank at Yagapuram Othakkadai near Thuvarankurichi along Tiruchi-Madurai Road, resulted in water-logging of the highway.
