NEW DELHI: Several cycle rickshaw pullers and representatives of political parties, trade unions and social organisations demonstrated outside Town Hall here on Monday demanding revocation of the ban on plying of rickshaws on the arterial roads of Delhi. According to the convenor of the "Save Cycle Rickshaw Campaign", Nalin Sinha, a nine-point charter of demands was presented to Municipal Commissioner A.K. Nigam. Mr. Sinha said the MCD chief had asked an additional commissioner to look into their demands. Revocation of the ban apart, the charter also demanded that the police and municipal functionaries should not harass them. Social security, removing the limit on the number of cycle rickshaws in the Capital, a detailed technical, social and economic study before arbitrarily banning them from the streets were some of the other demands. Mr. Sinha said cycle-rickshaws should not be viewed only as a traffic problem. "It is related to livelihood of thousands in which the Government has no investment. What would be the point if they begin committing suicide now and the Government then comes with a relief package? We are not against regulation but there should be an equality of opportunity," he said. "Instead of banning the cycle-rickshaws altogether, a solution should be found so that they get integrated with the entire transport system," he added.
