Meiktila battle hero dead
The battles of Meiktila and Mandalay were decisive for, despite logistical difficulties, the Allies deployed large armoured and mechanised forces in Central Burma. These, with air support, destroyed most of the Japanese forces in Burma. Gen. Bakshi was awarded the Military Cross for his heroic role in the battle.
Antiques stolen from Patna museum
Secretary of art and culture department, Anjani Kumar Singh said that theft was detected on Tuesday morning after the museum employees reported to duty. He said that largest statue of Lord Buddha was of 2 ft height while the remaining one had heights of 17 inches each. He said a thorough probe was being conducted into the case and an FIR was filed in Kotwali police station in this connection.
Three get lifer in kidnapping case
Additional District and Sessions Judge A.K. Bimal however acquitted another accused Rajesh of Gorer village due to lack of evidence. Another accuseed Anil of Salimsar Majra village was killed in an encounter by Delhi police. Those convicted were Rajinder of Salimsar Majra, Ashok of Dhanana village and Ashok of Garhwal village. The case against them was registered on December 24, 2004 in Gohana police station. Pronouncing the verdict on Monday, the Judge held the trio guilty of kidnapping and demanding money from Luxmi Chand, an oil trader of Gohana. Prosecution had said Luxmi Chand was kidnapped on December 24, 2004 by unidentified persons, who demanded Rs 20 lakh as ransom for his release. Luxmi Chand however managed to escape from the clutches of his kidnappers. Later, police identified and arrested four of the five accused in the case.
Girls run over by train
Rimpi (18) and Tamana (4) had arrived on a passenger train from Patiala with their relatives and the group was crossing rail lines to reach the main gate of the station. While the rest managed to get across safely, Rimpi and Tamana were run over by the Paschim Express, railway sources said. Railway police have registered a case in this regard. The bodies were handed over to the relatives after post-mortem examination.
Life imprisonment for murder accused
According to the prosecution, Pravin was hacked to death by Shiv Kumar Seth and his brothers Baccha, Vijay, Krishna and grandfather Mata Prasad on May 21, 1998, near Hanumanghat here. District and Sessions Judge Brij Bhushan Singh handed the life term to Shiv, besides a fine of Rs 10,000. The other accused were acquitted for lack of evidence.
