Six persons in judicial custody

Staff Correspondent

They did not respond to court summons regarding rasta roko staged by them after unrest in Palur

Madikeri: The president of the Madikeri taluk unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ravi Kushalappa, and five others, who were arrested on Monday evening for failing to respond to the court summons in relation to the rasta roko staged by them following disturbances in Palur four years ago, have been remanded in judicial custody till October 9.

The Palur disturbance had occurred in the wake of the desecration of the Sri Harishchandra temple at Palur, 20 km from here, by unidentified persons.

Pro-Hindu organisations went on a rampage following the desecration, damaging several houses in Palur and other places. The cadre had staged rasta roko at the General Thimmaiah Circle here.

Cases registered

The police had booked several cases against those who had taken part in it, including the six persons, who are now in jail.

The arrest warrants were issued by the judge as the six persons had failed to turn up at the court on September 11 and 16.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the advocates have moved a bail petition in the court seeking the release of arrested persons on Tuesday.

Jail Superintendent Thimmaiah told The Hindu on Tuesday that he had not received any intimation regarding bail. However, the six persons who had threatened to go on a fast after their arrests, did consume food, he clarified.

Crowd

A large number of persons had gathered in front of the jail here on Monday on hearing the news of the arrests.

District BJP president S.G. Medappa, had blamed the police for creating a situation, leading to the arrests of the persons. Zilla Panchayat members, taluk panchayat members and BJP workers had gathered in front of the jail.
