Infection and loss of hearing
ONE LESSER-KNOWN "day" passed almost unnoticed last weekend. It was the World Day for the Hearing Impaired. Radhika Poovaya, of Samvad Institute for Speech and Hearing, along with a few well-wishers organised some events to mark the day.
According to her, hearing loss can badly affect childhood development, especially speech. Without proper help, such children may be brushed aside as "slow learners". Infections of the ear often lead to loss of hearing among children, she says. If identified early enough, many children can get back their sense of hearing, at least partially.
