BELGAUM: The organisers of the special legislative session have floored the legislators and guests alike with their warm hospitality and delicious cuisine. The food of north Karnataka, and Belgaum in particular, is well known for its distinctive taste, flavour and culinary mix. Legislators, officials and media personnel from various parts of the State have been making a beeline to the dining halls. Chairman of the KLE Society and MLC Prabhakar Kore and chairman of the Legislative Council Sachidananda Khot chose the menu. Wheat, maize and jowar rotis are the popular delicacies of Belgaum and other districts of north Karnataka. Here, one can find a wide range of rotis such as jolada roti, thali peet, khadak roti and sajja roti (bajra roti). They are mainly served with a variety of chutneys or spicy curries. Dishes with which these rotis are served are the yenne badanekayi (spicy brinjal), kaalu palya (spiced dal), and soppu palya (spinach stir fry). Like every cuisine, Belgaum cuisine also has a wide range of desserts. Some of the popular sweet dishes of the State are "chiroti" (made out of sugar and milk), Mysore pak, obbattu or holige, all made with a mixture of jaggery, coconut and sugar, Dharwad peda and shavige payasa. "Godihuggi", a variety of sweet, is usually served for the special guests, was served for the lunch.
