Hunger strike to protect hills and wetlands

Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram District Sarvodaya Mandalam and the Kannur Paristhiti Samithi have joined hands for a campaign to protect the hills and wetlands in the State.

The two organisations will stage a hunger strike in front of the Secretariat on Thursday demanding legislation to protect the hills and fields from reclamation and encroachment.

Poet Sugathakumari will inaugurate the agitation. Kerala Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi chairman P. Gopinathan Nair, Sarvodaya Mandalam State vice-president T.P.R. Nath and Kannur Paristhiti Samithi president D. Surendranath are scheduled to address. The campaign committee on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister highlighting the need for a legislation.
