This Day That Age
The Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, arrived in Jakarta on September 26 as a State guest and expressed the hope that India and Indonesia would work closely together "for peace, prosperity and progress of the world." He was received on arrival by the Vice-President of Indonesia, Dr. Mohammad Hatta, and the Prime Minister, Dr. Ali Sastroamidjojo. After the Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament, Mr. Sartono and the Mayor of Jakarta, Mr. Sudiro, had also welcomed Dr. Radhakrishnan, he moved to a dais to receive a guard of honour. Later, Dr. Radhakrishnan met members of the Cabinet, diplomatic corps and the Indian community in Jakarta. Representatives of the Indian community presented him with floral gifts. In a short address, Dr. Radhakrishnan said he was very happy to be in Indonesia though only for a few days. "India and Indonesia have not been strangers to each other. They have had contacts for many centuries and lately they have come closer together."
