e-payment of service tax mandatory

Puducherry: The system of e-payment of service tax would be mandatory from October 1 for taxpayers who had paid more than Rs.50 lakh during the previous year or who had paid more than Rs.50 lakh during the current fiscal, a release from the Joint Commissioner of Central Excise S. Sankaravadivelu said here on Wednesday.

He said a workshop-cum-awareness programme was conducted recently by the Department in collaboration with the Indian Overseas Bank (Puducherry) in this regard. The Joint Commissioner of Central Excise said the facility would reduce the interface between the assessee and the department or the bank and reduce the transaction cost of compliance for taxpayers.

A power point presentation was also held during the workshop to highlight the security available under the system of e-payment.
