Need to disseminate census data to lowest level stressed

Special Correspondent

People are empowered to seek information under the RTI Act, say speakers at a workshop

HYDERABAD: Effective dissemination of census data to the lowest level will help policy-makers know the effects of investments made in various growth sectors and sensitise them about the steps to be taken.

This view was expressed when speakers made presentations at a workshop on `Census dissemination' organised by the Directorate of Census Operations (DCO), AP, here on Wednesday. The workshop is the third in the series organised `as a crusade to disseminate the census data amongst not only experts but also the general public'.

Inaugurating the workshop, A. K. Parida, Principal Secretary, Housing, said dissemination of data was all the more important these days when people were empowered to seek it under the RTI. He said spread of census data among scientists and academics would help them interpret the impact of various Government policies, so that they could render the right advice to the administration on tasks ahead.

Mr. Parida said that this intellectual section of the population had an important role to play in both questioning and enlightening the Government objectively after analysing the census data that emerged after every decade. "Let not the date remain idle. Use it and enlighten the Government where it has gone wrong in its analysis of policies," he remarked, enlightening the census staff on the tasks they had to discharge.

Earlier, D. Hanumantharaya, Deputy Director and Controlling Officer, DCO, AP, welcomed the gathering which included representatives of several Government organisations and NGOs.
