Bank staff strike on October 3

Staff Reporter

To express solidarity with LKB staff

KOCHI: Bank employees in the State, under the aegis of the State committee of the United Forum of Bank Unions, will stage a one-day strike on October 3 to express solidarity with the agitation by unions of employees in Lord Krishna Bank.

Talking to journalists here on Wednesday, V.J. Johny, convener of the Forum, said employees and officers of all public sector, private, cooperative and regional rural banks in the State would take part in the proposed agitation.

The employees of Lord Krishna Bank have been on an indefinite strike since September 6 demanding annulling of the decision to merge the bank with Centurion Bank of Punjab.

Other demands raised by the union included merger of Lord Krishna Bank with a public-sector bank and a high-level inquiry into the state of affairs of the bank, Mr. Johny said.

He said the proposed merger of the bank with a new generation bank would lead to the closure of its branches and end social banking services. The bank has a total of 111 branches, of which 68 are functioning in Kerala.

Employees of various banks in the State will report for work on September 28 wearing badges. Rallies and public meetings will be organised throughout the State on September 29.

On September 30, a protest meeting will be held near Taj Residency at 9 a.m., during a meeting of the shareholders of Lord Krishna Bank, he said.

The union leaders had met Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and sought his intervention to find a solution to the issue.

Attempts are also being made to collect the signatures of all legislators in the State in an effort to thwart the merger move, the union leaders said.

Union leaders V.B. Ananthanayaranan, T.S. Murali and P.V. Mathew were also present at the press conference.
