DHARWAD: There were approximately 100 robust rams vying for titles and it took more than seven hours before winners were decided. Known as "Tagarina Kalaga", the ram fight was conducted by the SSK Friends Club of Channapet in Old Hubli at the Vivekananda High School here on Wednesday. The fight organised as part of the Dasara Festival proved to be an exciting event and was witnessed by hundreds of enthusiasts till evening. The ram fight began around 11 a.m. and when the fights in all the categories were over, it was 6 p.m. The rams were grouped into five categories based on their number of teeth. The ram of Veeru Katare won in the eight-teeth category and that of Srinivas Dhongdi in the four-teeth category. The ram of Ambasa Habib emerged victorious in the milk teeth category. Raghu Pattan proved to be the luckiest among all ram trainers with his rams winning the title in the sixth-teeth and the two-teeth category. Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar sponsored the prize money for the event. The ram fight is usually conducted in villages and small towns during annual fairs and festivals. Of late, it is being conducted in cities also as an annual event. The SSK Friends Club has been organising this event for the past three years.
