MADURAI: The National Cadet Corps is making efforts to take in more women cadets, Commodore U.N. Chitnavis, Deputy Director-General (DDG), Tamil Nadu NCC, said on Wednesday. Addressing cadets at 2 (TN) Girls Battalion NCC here, he said the `Mixed Battalions,' a concept introduced two years ago but dropped owing to various constraints, were being revived. A battalion would comprise 33 per cent of women cadets, and men would fill the rest. "There were some hiccups initially, as there were not adequate number of women ANO's (Associated NCC Officers) and GCI's (Girls Cadet Instructors). We are handling the issue in a different manner now," he said. The aim was to take the percentage of women cadets from the current 19 to at least 33. Col. U.T. Babu, Group Commander, Madurai Group, NCC, said the Madurai Group had two battalions for women. One was in Madurai and the other was in Tirunelveli, with a combined strength of 1,500 cadets. The Naval Officer said efforts were being made to get retired army officers to train the cadets for taking the entry examinations for the armed forces.
