CHENNAI: Over 200 children from various special schools in the city presented a dance drama titled `Nava Vida Bhakthi' here recently.

They presented nine forms of devotion by depicting stories of Prahallada, Mira Bai, Arunachala, Bharata, Kannappa Nayanar, Mohammed, Martin, Arjuna, Gajendra and Lakshmi (the calf which came to Ramanashram in Thiruvannamalai).

The children's stage presence and emotive portrayal of the characters had the audience responding to the performance spontaneously, with thunderous rounds of applause and sometimes tears.

Students of RASA (Ramana Sunritya Aalaya Trust) Special School, RASA - The Art Centre, Andhra Mahila Sabha, Ashraya, ICCW, Matru Mandir, Saraswati Kendra Learning Centre and Swabodhini participated in the event.

Outreach programme

RASA volunteers have been visiting these schools regularly as part of an outreach programme in which they train students in various skills through dance and theatre.

For the past one-and-a-half months they have been rehearsing together. Though this is not their first production, volunteers and students put in several hours of hard work. "They really enjoy practice sessions and look forward to shows like these. Their enthusiasm is contagious and it is a pleasure working with them," said a RASA volunteer.

The show was conceptualised and choreographed by Ambika Kameshwar of RASA.
