Mumbai: Former India cricket captain Dilip Vengsarkar was on Wednesday elected Chairman of the National Selection Committee for two years. Vengsarkar is eligible for election for a third year in September 2008. "I am looking forward to working with the other members of the committee and the Indian team management,'' said Vengsarkar. While Vengsarkar replaced Kiran More from West Zone, former Hyderabad and India left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju replaced Tamil Nadu's V.B. Chandrasekhar in the five-member panel. North, Central and East Zones have retained Bhupinder Singh, Sanjay Jagdale and Ranjib Biswal. The tenure of all five will expire in September 2008. After the 77th AGM of the BCCI concluded at the Cricket Club of India here, its Treasurer, N. Srinivasan said the incumbent principal office-bearers Sharad Pawar, Niranjan Shah, M.P. Pandove and N. Srinivasan were elected unopposed for two years till September 2008. Member of Parliament from Maharashtra and President of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association Rajiv Shukla was elected Vice-President from East Zone. The Assam Cricket Association proposed Shukla's name. The other four Lalit Modi (North), Dayanand Narvekar (South), Chirayu Amin (West) and Shashank Manohar (Central) have retained their positions as Vice-Presidents.
Kapil is NCA chief
The BCCI also named Kapil Dev as Chairman of the National Cricket Academy Board and former India captain and ICC Elite Panel Umpire S. Venkatraghavan as Director of Umpires' Development Programme on a professional basis. Venkatraghavan will be assisted by a retired umpire from each zone to improve the standard of umpiring in India. The BCCI members also sprang a surprise by naming the Police Commissioner of Kolkata, Prasun Mukherjee, who had lost to Jagmohan Dalmiya in the Cricket Association of Bengal elections recently, in the prestigious Marketing Committee. For the first time, the BCCI has formed a Women's Cricket Committee, which has three women members in Shubhangi Kulkarni as the convenor, Diana Edulji and Ranee Norah. Among other decisions taken at the AGM were to conduct a South Asian Universities tournament involving India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from February 4 to 8, 2007, appointing Prof. Shetty as Head-Administration of the BCCI for five years on a professional basis.
CAP plea rejected
The BCCI also rejected the applications of Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) and Pondicherry Cricket Association (PCA) for associate membership. The BCCI has appointed a special committee to go into all aspects of new membership. The BCCI's new headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium premises will be inaugurated on November 4, a day before the ICC Champions Trophy final at the Brabourne Stadium. The C.K. Nayudu Awards function will also be held on the same day. Mr. N. Srinivasan said the ICC Executive Board would also meet for the first time in India (Mumbai) on November 4.
