Diploma course in video techniques

CHENNAI: Chennai residents can now learn to use video professionally. Madras University is offering a part-time diploma programme in basic video production techniques from this October.

The six-month course will be conducted in the evenings and aims at teaching college students as well as freelancers and amateur videographers. Subjects include videography, script writing, media and communication. The course involves intensive hands-on training and will be taught by both academics and industry professionals.

Application forms cost Rs. 100 and can be bought at the Department of Mass Media and Communication Studies, which is conducting the course along with the University Industry Community Interaction Centre. Si.Pa. Aditanar award given

Chennai: A.R. Lakshmanan, Supreme Court Judge, urged the management of the Daily Thanthi group to institute awards that recognised Tamil people's contribution in the fields of science and technology, law, medicine and economics, apart from the one that they have already instituted for promoting Tamil.

At the 102nd birth anniversary celebrations of Si. Pa. Aditanar, Daily Thanthi's founder, Mr. Lakshmanan said the newspaper group had done a commendable job in promoting Tamil among the public. He said the language used in the newspaper ensured that everyone could understand it.

Mr. Lakshmanan awarded the Si.Pa. Aditanar Senior Tamil Scholar award to M. Nannan, which included a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 lakh, and the Si.Pa. Aditanar Literary Award to poet Muthulingam for his book of poems "Kaatil Vidaitha Karuthu". The award included a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh. — Staff Reporter

Office-bearers elected

CHENNAI: Subramanian Engineering Limited director S. Ramanathan was unanimously elected president of the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 2006-07 at the chamber's 96th annual general meeting here.

At the same meeting Murugappa Group director (marketing) A. Vellayan and AVM Studios partner M. Balasubramanian were elected vice-presidents for the year, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

K.S. Ramanathan dead

CHENNAI: K.S. Ramanathan, who served as press secretary to former Prime Minister Charan Singh, died in Chennai on Wednesday following a massive heart attack. He was 85.

A member of the Indian Information Service, Mr. Ramanathan severed various media units of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, before he retired as Singh's press secretary.

Mr. Ramanathan is survived by two sons and a daughter. — Staff Reporter

Special trains for Durga Pooja festival

Chennai: Southern Railway will operate special trains for Durga Pooja festival.

Train No. 0842 Chennai Central - Howrah will leave Central at 10 a.m. on September 30, October 7, 14, 21, and 28 (Saturdays) and arrive at Howrah at 1.55 p.m. the next day.

In the return direction, the Train No.0841 will leave Howrah at 3.50 p.m. on October 4, 11, 18 and 25

(Wednesday) and arrive at Chennai Central at 8.05 p.m. the next day.

Advance reservation for the above trains will commence on September 28, according to a railway press release. — Special Correspondent

<1brief_head> Fatally knocked down

Tiruchi: Karthikeyan (40), a lorry driver, was killed after a lorry hit him on the Tiruchi - Namakkal main road at Kodiampalayam in the district in the wee hours of Tuesday. Karthikeyan died on the way to the hospital.

Held for selling lotteries

Tiruchi: Police arrested Rajendran (40) on the charge of selling lottery tickets illegally at Musiri on Monday. Ninety lottery tickets were seized from him, police said.

Passport offices in Madurai, Coimbatore

CHENNAI: Passport offices are likely to be opened in Madurai and Coimbatore by the first quarter of next year.

An indication to this was given by the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, E. Ahamed, in a communication to the Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, said a press release.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur Dam stood at 100.90 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday.

The inflow was 11,926 cusecs and the outflow, 19,976 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Man held for theft

Tuticorin : The police on Tuesday arrested Muthuramalingam, who was allegedly involved in many cases of theft and extortion in the district.

The police said he had murdered one Maharajan at Sivalaperi and a non-bailable warrant was pending against him.

The accused stole motorbikes at Bryant Nagar and on South Raja Street here.

He had assaulted a bus conductor with a deadly weapon for not stopping the vehicle as specified by him. He had threatened one Chinnadurai with a country bomb and weapons seeking money.

Demonstration

Tuticorin : Employees of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Workers' Federation staged a demonstration here on Wednesday to press their multi-point demands.

They urged the Government to issue 25 per cent bonus to all employees including those in the officers' cadre, merger of Daily Allowance with the basic pay and fixation of pay scale for contingency workers.

They demanded that all the contract labourers should be made permanent.

M Subramanian, P Balakrishnan and A Rajendran, all office bearers of the TNEWF, addressed the cadres.

In all, 300 persons took part in the agitation.

Rice seized

DINDIGUL : The food cell police seized 390 bags of rice meant for Public Distribution System, each weighing 50 kg and a lorry used for smuggling in a surprise vehicle check on Dindigul-Palani Road here on Wednesday. Siva Kumar (29) and Prakash (23) of Ramanathapuram were arrested on charges of smuggling the rice.

It was learnt that the duo tried to smuggle the bags to Coimbatore from Ramanathapuram. — Staff Reporter

7 held for auctioning panchayat post

ERODE: The Perundurai police arrested seven persons on Wednesday for auctioning the panchayat president and councillor posts.

According to Collector D. Karthikeyan, the arrested were C. Somasundaram, K.S. Palanisamy, K.K.Palanisamy, Eswaran, Muthuswamy, Selvam and K.N. Mani. The Collector said that K. K. Palanisamy made a bid for his wife for the post of president of the Karandipalayam Panchayat in Perundurai Panchayat Union and agreed to pay Rs. 1.10 lakh, which was reserved, for women.

Three others Eswaran, Muthuswamy and Selvam agreed to pay Rs. 30,000 each to obtain Councillor post. All the seven have been remanded to custody.- Staff Reporter

Two killed

SALEM: Two youths were killed when a State Transport Corporation bus hit a motorcycle near Mallur on Tuesday night.

The police said Murugan (25) and Sukumaran (26), both residents of Thippampatti, were on their way home, when the accident took place. They sustained serious injuries and died on the way to the hospital.

Cash missing

NAMAKKAL: A few unidentified persons broke open the doors of a house and did away with Rs. 1.55 lakh near Paramathi Velur on Tuesday.

The police said house owner Rangasamy (57) of Ayyampalayam was away, when the incident occurred.

Branch opened

Salem: Tata AIG Life Insurance Company Limited opened its full service branch office on Omalur Road here.

Neetasha Joshi, Zone Business Head (South, Tata AIG Life Insurance), inaugurated the company's 82nd branch.

At the inauguration, Mr. Joshi said that Salem was an important regional centre with a mix of industries as well as agriculture.
