Karnataka beats W. Australia

Principal Correspondent

Bangalore : Bolstered by a tail that wagged and bowlers who struck to a tight line, Karnataka defeated Western Australia by 30 runs in a one-day match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday.

Chasing Karnataka's modest score of 208, Western Australia's target was soon revised target to 202 from 45 overs as per the Duckworth-Lewis method after afternoon showers briefly curtailed play. The visitor was bowled out for 172 in 43.4 overs.

Western Australia lost opener Shaun Marsh early as he took off for a non-existent run and failed to beat Bharat Chipli's throw. Marsh's partner Luke Ronchi (25) offered some resistance while the middle-order caved in without a fight.

Seamer Mohammed Arif bowled a tight spell early on and in the middle overs, left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi tightened the leash with his bag of tricks (four for 19). Western Australian skipper Justin Langer was one of Joshi's victims. Peter Worthington (40 not out) and Darren Wates (44) shared a 69-run eighth-wicket partnership to delay the win.

Injudicious shots

Earlier, Karnataka's top-order crumbled playing injudicious shots and after Thilak Naidu (39) did his bit in setting things right, the repair job was left to Stuart Binny (40) and Sunil Joshi (36).

The duo posted a run-a-ball 74-run partnership for the ninth-wicket before getting out to tired shots against the spinners that was pouched inside the ring.

The teams will now play the remaining two one-dayers at Mysore on September 29 and 30.

The scores: Karnataka 208 in 45.3 overs (Stuart Binny 40) bt Western Australia 172 in 43.4 overs (Darren Wates 44, Peter Worthington 40 not out, Sunil Joshi four for 19).
