Water-level recedes in Manjra river

Special Correspondent

Communication links in three villages in Bhalki restored

BIDAR: The flood situation in the villages on the banks of the Manjra river in Bidar district showed slight improvement on Tuesday with reduction in water- levels. Communication links in three villages in Bhalki have been restored.

But the district administration is still keeping the villages on alert as there is a possibility of water level in the river increasing after water released from Dhanegoan reservoir in Latur, Maharashtra, would reach Karnataka borders by Wednesday night.

There is some confusion regarding the exact amount of water released from Dhanegoan reservoir owing to the lack of communication from the Maharashtra authorities.

A release from the Deputy Commissioner's office said that Maharashtra had released 15,000 cusecs of water from the reservoir on September 25 and it would take minimum 30 hours to reach Karnataka borders.

Flood-prone villages

Official sources said that the district administration had identified 22 villages on the banks of the river in Bidar, Aurad and Bhalki taluks as flood-prone if water released from the Dhanegoan Reservoir continued to increase.

The administration has also stationed buses and other vehicles in eight low lying villages on the banks of river to shift people to safer places in case of an emergency. Sources said that there were no reports of floodwaters entering fields in any of the villages on the banks of the river. Even if release of water from Dhanegoan reservoir was increased, there was only a remote possibility of floods as water level in the river had started receding from 5.2 m. above the normal level on Tuesday to 4.5 m on Wednesday.

According to reports, the Dhanegoan reservoir continued to get heavy inflow due to copious rains in the catchment area and release of water from it continued on Wednesday. There was very little rain in Bidar district today and inflow in the tributaries of the Manjra river came down drastically.
