CPI(M) workers stage protest

Special Correspondent

They criticise the decision to close down Bharat Gold Mines

GULBARGA: The CPI(M) on Wednesday criticised the Union Government for its decision to close down Bharath Gold Mines in Kolar District. It demanded reversal of the decision and renewal of gold mining activity there. CPI(M) workers led by the party's State Secretariat member Maruti Manpade staged a protest demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

They handed over to him a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister.

Studies had revealed that the Bharat Gold Mines still had gold deposit worth over Rs. 2,000 crore, and that there were rich gold deposits in a 90 km stretch from Chigargunta in Andhra Pradesh to Srinivaspura in Kolar district, it said. Mr. Manpade said that any move to sell Bharat Gold Mines to any foreign company would be opposed.

Mining operations

The Union Government should revive the mine on its own or hand over mining operations to a cooperative society of workers, he added.
