Joint mechanism a trap: BJP leader

Special Correspondent

The mood in the country is against resumption of talks with Pakistan, he says

HYDERABAD: The former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, M. Venkaiah Naidu, has accused the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government of "falling into the trap" laid by Pakistan by agreeing for a joint mechanism to counter terrorism.

The proposed talks between the countries were against "national interest and compromises our position on Jammu and Kashmir," he said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

Mr. Naidu said there was an urgent need for reviewing the Government's security policy, which lacked clarity, ability or political will to address the nation's concerns.

The proposed joint mechanism was a trap laid by Pakistan to get a foothold in Kashmir.

Cross-border terrorism

This approach brought Jammu and Kashmir into focus, while relegating cross-border terrorism to the background, he said.

Also, the mood in the country was against resumption of talks with Pakistan till it dismantled the terror infrastructure.
