Sonia releases water from Brahmamsagar

Brings joy to ayacutdars of Mydukur constituency



FILLIP TO IRRIGATION: Sonia Gandhi pressing a button to let off water from the Brahmamsagar sluice under Telugu Ganga project in Kadapa district on Wednesday.

Brahmamgari Matham (Kadapa dt.) : UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi released water from the left and right sluices of Brahmamsagar reservoir under Telugu Ganga project to irrigate an ayacut of 50,000 acres on Wednesday, bringing joy to ayacutdars of Mydukur constituency who waited for over 23 years for their dream to come true.

She formally let off 500 cusecs of water from each of the two sluices by pressing a button. Union Minister Panabaka Lakshmi, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Keshava Rao, AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, AICC joint secretary Iqbal Singh, Minister for Major Irrigation Ponnala Lakshmaiah and MPs S. Jaipal Reddy and U. Arun Kumar were present.

Unveils pylon

After waving to the people who gathered near the reservoir, Ms. Gandhi drove to the Telugu Ganga guest house.

She unveiled a pylon marking release of water from Brahmamsagar reservoir. She had lunch and took rest for about an hour before leaving for Kurnool at 3 p.m.

Sri Pothuluri Veera Brahmendraswamy reservoir at Brahmamgari Matham in Mydukur constituency, popularly known as Brahmamsagar, was completed exactly 23 years and five months after Telugu Ganga project was taken up in 1983.

Brahmamsagar reservoir built with an outlay of Rs.115.03 crores with a capacity of 17.50 tmcft, has a storage of 7.50 tmcft at present. It has been supplying 2.75 tmcft of water to Poondi reservoir from August 15 onwards to cater to drinking water needs of Chennai city.

Presenting bouquets

Mydukur MLA D.L. Ravindra Reddy, Badvel MLA D.C. Govinda Reddy and Joint Collector Kanthilal Dande received Ms. Gandhi on her arrival by presenting bouquets.

Ms. Gandhi complimented Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for completing the reservoir under his pet project `Jalayagnam'.
