KOZHIKODE: Ombudsman for Local Self-Government Institutions T.K. Chandrasekharadas on Wednesday indicted the Corporation authorities for the callous attitude with regard to managing of slaughterhouses in the city. The criticism came on a petition filed by the Veterinarians in Environment Watch (View) an organisation of senior veterinarians in the city, that pointed to the poor state of slaughterhouses in the city at the sitting held at the Collectorate conference hall here. The Ombudsman has directed the Corporation and the district officials to initiate measures to find a site for the setting up of an abattoir in the city in keeping with the stipulated norms, and report the matter at the sitting to be held on October 10. In the complaint presented before the Ombudsman, president of View T.V. Ramachandran highlighted the total apathy of the Corporation in not having adequate facilities at places were animals were slaughtered in the city, and to ensure that the norms and stipulations were followed. The Ombudsman wondered how the one veterinarian appointed by the Corporation checks and conducts examination on slaughterhouses when there were as many as 100 sites where animals were slaughtered, and meat sold for the consumption of the general public. The continuing apathy of the authorities in conducting foolproof examination of slaughter animals despite innumerable petitions from View in the last seven years, and highlighting of the issue by the media too, came in for criticism. The Corporation authorities were asked to immediately initiate measures in keeping with the norms.
Told to relocate traders
Justice Chandrasekharadas asked the Corporation authorities to find space to provide facility to two vegetable merchants to carry on trade. The plea of the traders was that they were dislocated following the demolition of the vegetable market at West Hill. The vegetable market was also removed when the fish market at West Hill was demolished. The Corporation secretary was directed to inform the Ombudsman of the steps taken to relocate the two traders, at the next sitting. In another petition, Justice Chandrasekharadas wanted the panchayat deputy secretary to give a report on an urgent basis on the steps taken with regard to a private complaint on garbage being disposed in the house compound at Iringannur in Edacheri panchayat. Two persons from Kakkodi Panchayat came before the panel to submit a petition that though they were beneficiaries, they were not given the housing assistance as per norms. The panchayat has been asked to provide the housing assistance in the next annual budget. As many as 29 cases from Kozhikode district were taken up on Wednesday, and settlement arrived at in eight. On September 28, the Ombudsman will take up the complaints from Kannur, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kasaragod districts.
