Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering celebrated `Sivanthi Arts festival' on its premises at Tiruchendur recently to mark the 71st birth anniversary of its founder-chairman, B. Sivanthi Adityan. In his inaugural address, V. Umapathy, Manager (HR), Tata Teleservices, Chennai, called upon the students to develop communication skills and body language, which would put them in good stead in terms of interviews. "While facing an interview board, candidates should neither be aggressive nor passive. They should balance their conduct," he said. E.B. Singh, Principal, and R. Krishnakanthan, Chief Executive Officer of Aditanar Educational Institution, spoke.
St. Xavier's College of Education, Palayamkottai, has got autonomy and its inaugural function was celebrated on the college premises recently. In his presidential address, the Regional Joint Director, Collegiate Education, Tirunelveli, G. Gnanapandithan, highlighted the efficiency of Jesuit congregation in running the educational institutions and their eminent features of functional autonomy. The provincial of Jesuit congregation and chief guest of the function, Rev. Fr. Devadoss SJ, said quality education was being expected by the students community, owing to the impact of privatisation, liberalisation and globalisation. The Principal of St. Xavier's College of Education, Rev. Fr. Soosai Sebastian SJ, the Rector, St. Xavier's Educational Institutions, Palayamkottai, Antony Pappuraj SJ, the member of University Grants Commission, Rev. Fr. Xavier Alphonse SJ, former principal of St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi, Rev. Fr. John Britto shared their experiences on autonomy.
A one-day training in `Personality Development' was organised by Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli, recently, in which students were trained in techniques of facing the interview, how to reach the top and come up in life with flying colours. Leadership qualities of the students were also fine-tuned by a team of experts from Junior Chamber International, India comprising Rm. Ramanathan, international trainer, Junior Chamber, Rm. Lakshmanan, zone trainer, Karaikudi, and Krishna Varatarajan, professional trainer, Pudukottai.
Institutes for higher education have a multifaceted role to play. Preparing students for placement is one of them. Rural institutions have a greater responsibility of training their students for a bright career. To cater to this need and demand, the Career Guidance Cell of Sri Parasakthi College for Women, Courtallam, jointly organised a one-day training programme recently with Guimax Education Private Limited, Chennai, for all outgoing students. The programme comprised interview preparation, communication and personality development, neutral accent, group discussion, professional presentation and career guidance.
The University of Cambridge organised business English certificate examinations at St. Xavier's Catholic College of Engineering at Chunkankadai in Kanyakumari district recently. The British Council of India conducted the examinations. Business English Certificate helps to develop cross-cultural communication skills and the overall development of students. A total of 126 candidates from Noorul Islam College of Engineering and St. Xavier's Catholic College of Engineering attended the examinations.
The Youth Red Cross of Noorul Islam College of Engineering conducted a blood donation camp at Kumarakovil recently. More than 36 students donated blood. The Chairman of the college, Majid Khan, Principal, Thiyagarajan, Manager, Janardhanan, and Carolin Geetha of Government Medical College Hospital at Asaripallam participated.
