Besides academic skills, teamwork, innovation, global mobility, strong communication, flexibility and learning are essential qualities to make students employable, said Narendra Medappa, Associate Manager, Infosys Technologies Limited during his pre-placement talk at the State-level placement programme organised by Anna University at P.S.N.A. College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul on Wednesday. Major expectations from students by the company were the ability to derive generic conclusions from specific instances and apply them to new problems. The Infosys hires people for their potentiality and ability to learn not just for their degrees, he said. Over 3,440 final engineering students from 50 engineering colleges in Madurai region took part.
Gandhigram Rural University conducted training for National Service Scheme volunteers on its campus on Wednesday. In his special address, Vice-Chancellor T. Karunakaran appealed to students to combat HIV, terrorism and corruption. Professor G. Palanithurai offered to conduct voter awareness campaign on the eve of the local body polls. Information Development and Resource Agency Director M. Sivamurugan exhorted the youth to bring school dropouts back to school. Nehru Yuva Kendra regional coordinator, M. Sadacharavel and others spoke.
Nadar Saraswathi College of Arts and Science in Theni organised a programme on personality development at the college recently. Positive and necessary thoughts should be nourished in the mind, said Savithri, member of Sri Brahma Kumarigal Association. She said that it was high time the student community realised the value of positive thoughts to achieve not only their goals but also establish peace in the country. Students must shed inferiority complex to be successful in life, she said. Principal K. Girija expressed concern over erosion of cultural values that resulted in low morality and mistrust with one other. Later, students N. Suganya, (third year BBA), V. Kavitha (third year computer science) and M. Dhivya (third year B.A. Lit.) demonstrated memory technique proving that the mind was more powerful than anything under the sun.
Soft skills are essential to make students employable. This was highlighted at a State-level seminar on students' support and progression in enhancing quality in higher education at Hajee Karutha Rowther Howdia College at Uthamapalayam recently. L. Tharabhai, Head and Coordinator of School of Social Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, stressed the need for producing employable graduates. Speakers from various colleges and universities focused on the importance of communicative skills.
A workshop on `Micro controllers and embedded systems' was organised by the Department of Computer Science, Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi, on Saturday. S. Elango, Lecture, Department of Computer Science, V.H.N.S.N.College, Virudhunagar, was the chief guest. Presiding over the function, K.Rajakumar, Principal, spoke about the application area of embedded systems with examples. Mr. Elango spoke about the concept of embedded systems with simple programmes using C language.
A guest lecture was organised by the training and placement cell of Arasan Ganesan Polytechnic College, Sivakasi, recently for the final year computer engineering students. V.R. Muthu, Managing Director, Idhayam Group, Virudhunagar, was the chief guest. Mr. Muthu spoke about the need for management and the importance of maintaining a time log. Students must think positively and read various journals for improving their communication skills. A.R. Subbaraman, Principal, presided over the function.
Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering celebrated `Sivanthi Arts festival' on its premises at Tiruchendur recently to mark the 71st birth anniversary of its founder-chairman, B. Sivanthi Adityan. V. Umapathy, Manager (HR), Tata Teleservices, Chennai, called upon the students to develop communication skills and body language, which would put them in good stead in terms of interviews. "While facing an interview board, candidates should neither be aggressive nor passive. They should balance their conduct," he said. E.B. Singh, Principal, and R. Krishnakanthan, Chief Executive Officer of Aditanar Educational Institution, spoke.
